What Is Down Syndrome?
Down syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs when a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. Instead of the usual two copies, individuals with Down syndrome have three copies—also known as Trisomy 21. This additional genetic material affects development and results in certain physical characteristics and varying degrees of intellectual disability.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Down syndrome is one of the most common chromosomal conditions diagnosed in the United States.
