The Last Necklace – Part 1
The jewelry store was unnaturally quiet.
Not the peaceful kind of silence — but the heavy kind that settles in your chest and makes every breath feel deeper than it should.
Bright white lights reflected off the glass display cases, making diamonds shimmer and gold gleam with lifeless perfection. Everything sparkled beautifully.
Everything except her.
She stood at the counter in a simple red dress, her fingers trembling as they held a delicate gold necklace. A small round locket hung from the thin chain, slightly worn around the edges — proof that it had been loved, carried, and protected for years.
Her eyes were swollen from crying, though she was trying her best to appear steady.
Across from her, the jeweler adjusted his glasses and examined the necklace carefully.
“Are you absolutely sure you want to sell this?” he asked in a calm, professional tone. “It’s old… and it’s worth quite a bit.”
She swallowed hard.
“Yes,” she whispered. “I’m sure.”
But she wasn’t.
Because this necklace wasn’t just gold.
It was the last thing her mother ever gave her.
