What is Gyan Mudra?
Gyan Mudra, also known as the “Mudra of Knowledge,” is one of the most widely practiced hand gestures in yoga and meditation. The word Gyan means wisdom or knowledge in Sanskrit. By simply joining the tip of the thumb and the index finger together while keeping the other fingers extended, you create a symbolic circuit of energy.
This mudra represents the union of the individual self (the index finger) with universal consciousness (the thumb). Practicing it regularly can awaken mental clarity, inner peace, and higher spiritual awareness.
How to Practice Gyan Mudra
-
Sit comfortably in a cross-legged position (such as Sukhasana or Padmasana).
-
Place your hands on your knees, palms facing upward.
-
Touch the tip of your index finger to the tip of your thumb.
-
Keep the other three fingers gently extended.
-
Close your eyes and breathe slowly and deeply.
You can practice Gyan Mudra for 15–30 minutes daily, either during meditation, pranayama, or even while sitting quietly.
